“To be human is to be 'a' human, a specific person with a life history and idiosyncrasy and point of view; artificial intelligence suggests that the line between intelligent machines and people blurs most when a puree is made of that identity.” - Brian Christian
Throughout
time, humans have been fascinated by the idea of machines “thinking” like
humans. In Eagle Eye we became acquainted with ARIIA (an Autonomous
Reconnaissance Intelligence Integration Analyst), in Her, we
were introduced to Samantha (a highly capable computer program that doubled as
a personal assistant), in Ex Machina we fell for Ava (a humanoid
robot with genuine human traits) and in I, Robot, we befriended Sonny (a
friendly robot).
The
historic rise in technology has opened the portals of inspiration for
scientists and filmmakers alike, propelling robots and computer programming
into the spotlight as sources of inspiration, wonder and even fear. Today,
Artificial intelligence is no longer constrained to the screens of science
fiction movies; it has infiltrated itself into the business world, and has
taken root into our daily lives.
Concepts like machine learning, robotics, deep learning and artificial intelligence, have been thrown around, here and there, spiking our interest and commercializing these once scientific concepts. But what exactly is artificial intelligence, and what are its implications?
John
McCarthy, an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist coined the
term “artificial intelligence” in 1955 describing it as “every aspect of
learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely
described that a machine can be made to stimulate it. An attempt will be made
to find how to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts,
solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves”. In
simple terms, Artificial intelligence can be expressed as a branch of computer
science that specializes in making computers behave like humans.
From
Apple’s Siri, to Netflix’s movie recommendations system and Facebook’s facial
recognition apps, artificial intelligence has already infiltrated our daily
routines. AI’s ability to transcend all business sectors based on the premise
that it can learn from the data it collects has resulted in a huge impact in
the business world. The introduction of AI in the office space is driving
increases in productivity, and converting Big Data into important trend
predictions and insights that are exponentially greater than that of manual
processing.
The
exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence, along with its great potential
is ground for a lot of excitement. The truth is that artificial intelligence is
revolutionizing the way we think about human interactions, the way the health
industry processes data, and even the way we drive our cars. This blog will record,
narrate and analyze the innovations of Artificial intelligence and the ways
that this technology is single handedly changing the way we conduct business,
and through one innovation at a time, changing our world forever.
